Photo Eyes

Photo Eyes - also known as photo-electric sensors - are sensors used to detect the presence of an object or vehicle without making any physical contact. A Photo Eye consists of an emitter and receiver. Photocell emitters send a beam of light, for example an infrared beam, and when interrupted the beam sensor knows an object has entered its detection range. Photoelectric sensors can be used in a wide range of both commercial and residential applications including gate automation, vehicle counting, arrival notifications, or automation of garage doors, gates, and lights. Photoeyes from Action Industries are NEMA rated for outdoor use on garage door operators and gate openers.

Types of Photo Eyes

  • Thru-Beam Photo Eye - Emitter and receiver are in separate housings and are mounted directly across from each other. Example: The EMX IRB-MON Universal Safety Thru-beam.

  • Retro-Reflective Sensors - Emitter and receiver are located in the same housing, a reflector is used to bounce the signal back to the device. Example: The OMRON E3K with Reflector and Bracket and The NIR-50 12-240 V.

  • Diffuse-Reflective Photo Eye Sensors - Emitter and receiver are located in the same housing, but without any reflective material mounted opposite to the device. This style of photo eye is less accurate but more cost effective than other styles.
